Hydrogen-Ready Agrivoltaic Plants in Southern Italy: Supplying Biomass for Biogas Production and Utilizing Cutting-Edge Technology for High-Yield Renewable Energy

The NEXUS SOLARIS project in Irpinia, Campania, is transforming over 1,300 hectares into a uniquely integrated agrivoltaic hub, combining 495.35 MWp of solar power capacity with advanced agricultural and bioenergy technologies. This groundbreaking initiative weaves renewable energy production directly into agricultural activities, creating a distinctive ecosystem that goes beyond traditional renewable energy projects.

Unique Circular Economy Model

NEXUS SOLARIS distinguishes itself by not only producing green hydrogen and electricity but also supporting bioplastic and biogas production. Biomass and agricultural waste are repurposed as feedstock for bioplastics, contributing to the circular economy by creating biodegradable alternatives to conventional plastics. This approach minimizes waste and reduces reliance on fossil-based materials, positioning the project as a model of sustainable resource use.

Biogas and Organic Waste Management

The biogas facility within NEXUS SOLARIS processes agricultural residues and organic waste to produce biogas, which can be used as renewable energy for electricity, heating , or as a precursor for biomethane. This dual functionality not only provides a stable energy backup but also enables efficient waste management, enhancing the project’s environmental sustainability.

Energy Storage and Grid Stability

To manage energy fluctuations and stabilize power output, NEXUS SOLARIS uses sodium-nickel batteries and metal hydride hydrogen storage systems for surplus energy. This enables the facility to supply a consistent flow of energy, even during periods of low solar generation, ensuring resilience and stability within Italy’s energy grid. By storing both renewable electricity and hydrogen, the project bridges immediate and future energy demands, catering to local industries and laying the groundwork for potential exports.

Closed-Loop Agriculture and Fertilization

The project’s commitment to a closed-loop system is evident in its use of digestate—a nutrient-rich byproduct from the biogas process—as organic fertilizer for nearby farms. This practice enhances soil fertility, reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers, and returns valuable nutrients to the land, supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Farmers benefit not only from renewable energy but also from improved crop productivity, creating a collaborative, self-sustaining ecosystem.

A New Standard in Agrivoltaic Integration

NEXUS SOLARIS is more than a renewable energy facility; it’s a visionary blueprint for integrated energy and agriculture that harmonizes multiple renewable technologies within a single project. This approach sets a new standard in agrivoltaic projects, uniquely positioning NEXUS SOLARIS as a leader in sustainable innovation that supports Italy’s green transition while fostering local economic resilience and environmental stewardship across multiple sectors.

Dual Use Agrivoltaic Innovation

NEXUS SOLARIS uniquely combines solar energy production with sustainable agriculture. By utilizing the same land for both energy generation and the cultivation of crops used in biomass and bioplastics, the project creates a synergy that boosts economic resilience for farmers while promoting environmental sustainability.

Hydrogen Ready for the future

The project is strategically designed to support future green hydrogen production. This forward-thinking approach positions NEXUS SOLARIS to lead in the transition toward hydrogen-based energy systems, ensuring long-term relevance and contribution to the global clean energy economy.

Scalable Efficiency and Monitoring

With 20 modular solar plants spread across 1,300 hectares, NEXUS SOLARIS optimizes operational efficiency through strategic placement and advanced monitoring systems. This ensures reduced operational costs, proactive maintenance, and maximized energy output, delivering strong returns for all stakeholders.
